The 2-Day Experimental Technique Workshop offers a transformative artistic journey, beginning with still-life drawing and progressing into painting and monotype, where participants explore a range of mediums like oils, acrylics, and monotype prints. Through hands-on experiences with unconventional materials such as fabric swatches, stencils, rubber stamps, sand, gold, and silver leaf, attendees learn to manipulate textures and depth, enhancing their artistic repertoire. This immersive experience explores and refines technical skills but also instills confidence in experimenting with diverse techniques, ultimately enhancing your creative expression.
The ideal candidate for this workshop is an artist with some drawing and painting experience and a genuine curiosity to explore and learn about diverse techniques. By the end of the two-day workshop, participants will have created a portfolio of experimental techniques applied in both one painting and one monotype.
All materials are provided. This includes 1 canvas, monotype plaque and paper, drawing paper, pencils, brushes, oil and acrylic paints, Liquin, sand (yes, real sand), stencils, fabric swatches, gold and silver leaf, and rubber stamps.
(Please feel free to bring your own paints, brushes and any thing else that you think might enhance your time in the workshop).
Day 1:
Develop the background on your canvas using acrylics.
Sketch the still-life on paper.
Prepare and apply fabric swatches and sand.
Develop and print monotype.
Cut still-life into 4 pieces, rearrange to create abstract.
Day 2:
Introduction to theory of color using the color wheel.
Using oils, create painting inspired in rearranged abstract drawing.
Finish details, retouch painting and monotype.
About José:
José Bayro C., born in 1960 in Cochabamba, Bolivia, studied architecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and earned a Master's degree in painting from the San Carlos Academy. He has furthered his education taking classes and diploma courses in monumental ceramics, engraving, lithography, screen printing, image post-production, sculpture, philosophy and cultural management.
Bayro C. has exhibited his work in galleries and museums across Mexico, Bolivia, the United States, France, Canada, and Italy, and participated in biennials in Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and Peru, as an invited artist. His work has been discussed by notable critics, including Juan Acha, Jorge Zabala, and Carlos Monsiváis.
He served on the jury for the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA/Mexico) in the Young Creators Scholarship program in 1998. He has published several books, including "Distorsión de los valores en fuga" (2010), "El trompo" (2013), "Urdimbre de porcelana en XX briosos latidos" (2019), and "Bayro Barroco" (2022). Bayro is also the benefactor of the Bayro Corrochano Children's Drawing Biennial in Bolivia and Mexico.
His work forms part of public collections at institutions such as the Academy of San Carlos, the University Cultural Complex in Puebla, the International Museum of the Baroque, and the National Museum of Art in La Paz, as well as private collections globally.
