Join Butcher Shop Press Studio Printer Elena Hernandez-Rubio for a four-hour introduction to monotype printmaking.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, participants will create single-plate monotype prints using simple reductive techniques.

In addition to the basics of reductive methods, you will learn the "trace" technique to transfer your own drawings, found images, and collages to your monotypes. Along the way, you’ll learn the basics of ink consistency, roller application, simple tool-making, and proper paper handling.

Students are encouraged to bring a few drawings or found/collaged images to reference. We will also provide a few magazines and art books for students to trace from.

All inks and tools are provided, along with one sheet of Rives BFK paper (enough for four prints). Additional paper will be available for purchase in the studio. Cash or card accepted.

A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print made by applying ink to a flat surface, or matrix, and transferring the image to paper using a press. Working with a limited color palette on an acrylic plate, you’ll explore the wide range of tones possible through the reductive, or “dark field,” method. Ink is first rolled onto the plate and then selectively removed using brushes, rags, stencils, and a variety of found or handmade tools to reveal the image.
